Pakistan: Heatwave continues in Karachi /update 1

Event

A heatwave is ongoing in Sindh province, including in Karachi, as of Wednesday, May 23. The heatwave - with temperatures reaching above 47°C (117°F) in some parts of Sindh province - comes amid the holy month of Ramadan, during which time Muslims are expected to forego food and water during daylight hours, making it particularly dangerous. The high temperatures have left at least 65 people dead in Karachi. Associated power outages have been reported in the province. Further business closures and power outages are expected throughout the duration of the heatwave, which is expected to continue in the coming days.

Context

Periodic power outages generally exacerbate extreme summer heat in Pakistan, including in Sindh province. In particular, Karachi has been affected by extremely high summer temperatures in recent years. In 2015, a heatwave in Karachi left at least one thousand people dead.

Advice

Individuals present in Sindh province, particularly in Karachi, as well in as Balochistan and Punjab provinces, are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [0.4 gallons] of water per day; however, it is advised to avoid drinking in public during Ramadan), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in vulnerable populations such as young children and seniors. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
