Slovakia: Protest in Bratislava May 25

Silent protest planned at Námestie SNP in Bratislava on May 25 to express dissatisfaction with government and demand early elections; localized transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Thousands of anti-government protesters are expected to stage a silent demonstration beginning at 17:00 (local time) at Námestie SNP in Bratislava on Friday, May 25. Localized traffic disruptions - including public transportation disruptions and detours on nearby roads - are expected in the vicinity of Staré Mesto (Old Town). A heightened security presence is also expected near the demonstration.

Context

The demonstration has been called for to express dissatisfaction with the ruling government, protest perceived corruption, and demand early elections. It comes amid a series of anti-government protests organized by the "For a Decent Slovakia" group, which began in early March and has continued through April and May. These demonstrations began as an outcry against the murder of a local investigative journalist and his fiancée, but have grown into a wider denunciation of government corruption and general ineffectiveness. The protests have already led to the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Advice

Individuals in Bratislava are advised to avoid all large demonstrations as a precaution and allow for additional time to travel in the vicinity of such gatherings. Adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
