Informational

Event

The Palestine Solidarity Alliance (PSA) is expected to hold a demonstration in Johannesburg on Tuesday, May 15. Participants are expected to gather outside the US Consulate General on Sandton Drive, as well as on the intersection of Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road. The protest is scheduled to last from 14:00 until 18:00 (local time). City officials have issued a permit authorizing 300 people to take part in the event. Localized traffic disruptions are expected in the area.

Context

The US Consulate General announced it will remain open during the protest.

The PSA is protesting US President Donald Trump’s decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a departure from the previous US and international position of neutrality on the status of the city claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians. On May 14, there will be an inauguration ceremony for the new US embassy in the city. Palestinians also observe the Nakba on May 15, annually commemorating the 1948 Palestinian exodus from the territory that became Israel.

Advice

Individuals in Johannesburg are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
