Russian journalist reportedly killed in Kyiv appears alive at press conference on May 30; Ukrainian authorities say his death was faked to catch Russian agents

On Wednesday, May 30, Arkady Babchenko, a Russian journalist who was reportedly murdered in Kyiv the previous day, appeared at a press conference held by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU). According to SBU officials, a special operation was conducted to stage Babchenko’s death in order to catch suspected Russian agents that were attempting to murder him. At least one person has reportedly been detained by the SBU during the operation.

Context

Babchenko has been living in exile in Kyiv since 2017 after claiming that the Russian government was organizing a political harassment campaign against him. He has been an outspoken critic of the Kremlin in recent years, particularly against Russian support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
