Event

A rise in cases of H1N1 influenza has been reported in Colombia. According to the Ministry of Health, at least 366 cases, including 44 fatalities, have been registered across 18 departments
(as of June 25). The worst-hit areas have been the departments of Norte de Santander, Nariño, and Casanare.

To compare, in all of 2017 only 17 flu-related deaths were reported in Colombia. However, health officials have ruled out the possibility of a large-scale epidemic.

Context

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. A vaccine is available.

Advice

Individuals are advised to take preventive measures to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading the disease, e.g. frequent hand-washing and/or use of antibacterial gel, sneezing and coughing into one’s elbow, avoiding contact with individuals presenting flu-like symptoms (as well as avoiding contact with others when ill), and seeking medical attention in the event of a fever over 38°C (100°F), severe coughing, and sore throat or difficulty breathing.
