Grenade attack during rally attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa June 23; one person killed and at least 150 wounded

On the morning (local time) of Saturday, June 23, an unidentified assailant threw a grenade at a pro-government rally at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa. The blast killed one person and wounded at least 150 more, including ten in critical condition. Local media reports that the assailant, who was wearing a police uniform, tried to throw the grenade onto the stage where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was finishing a speech. Security officials have announced they believe that Prime Minister Ahmed was the target of the attack. As of 17:00 on Saturday, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
