Ghana: Opposition protest in Accra June 29

Civil society group plan to hold a march on June 29 in Accra; traffic disruptions likely

Warning

Event

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has planned to stage a protest in the capital Accra on Friday, June 29, to denounce the dismissal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, and her two deputies. Protesters were expected to gather in the morning (local time) at Obra Spot, located at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. However, the police have warned that the demonstration has not been authorized. As such, violence between protesters and security forces is possible, notably if the police attempt to disperse the demonstration by force. Localized traffic disruptions are also likely.

Context

President Akufo-Addo removed Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaah, on June 28 over allegations of corruption and misconduct.

Advice

Those present in Accra are advised to keep abreast of the situation and avoid any protests.
