Large demonstrations to take place in Rome June 1-2; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Large demonstrations are planned in Rome on Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2. Some 1000 people are expected to participate in a demonstration at Piazza Santissimi Apostoli at 14:00 (local time) on Friday. Another rally is planned to take place at Piazza della Repubblica at 16:00 in support of Italian President Sergio Mattarella; 1000 people are expected to participate.

On Saturday, June 2, the 5-Star Movement is planning to stage a demonstration at Piazza Bocca della Verità at 19:00; 2000 people are expected to participate. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near protest sites.

Context

The planned demonstrations come after the populist 5-Star Movement and League parties resurrected plans to form a coalition government on May 31, avoiding a potential repeat vote following three months of political uncertainty. President Mattarella approved the government proposed by the parties late on May 31, and Giuseppe Conte - a law professor who has never before held political office - was sworn in as the new prime minister on June 1.

Advice

Individuals in Rome are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
