Mexico: Hurricane Bud off Pacific coast June 11 /update 1

Hurricane Bud moving north off Pacific coast; landfall possible in Baja California June 15; heavy rain possible in western Mexico

Event

The low pressure system located off Mexico’s Pacific coast has strengthened into Hurricane Bud. According to the National Hurricane Center, Bud is located - as of early Monday, June 11 (local time) - approximately 375 km (230 mi) southwest of Colima state. A tropical storm warning is in place for the coastline of Jalisco state.

The storm is currently forecast to move in an east-northeasterly direction and weaken into a tropical storm before making landfall in Baja California Sur state sometime on Friday, June 15. Bud could also bring heavy rain and stormy conditions to western Mexico in the coming hours and days. Associated flooding and mudslides are possible.

Context

The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
