Pakistan: Heatwave and power outages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa /update 1

Heatwave causes power outages and protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent days as of June 5; high temperatures and consequent power outages expected to continue in the coming days

Warning

Event

A heatwave with temperatures of over 40°C (104°F) has recently caused power outages in several cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as of Tuesday, June 5, including in Peshawar, Mardan, and Nowshera. The power outages have reportedly lasted for over 14 hours in some areas, prompting residents to stage protests and block roads over the last few days. Security forces have fired tear gas to disperse some of the protesters. Continuing high temperatures, consequent power outages, and associated protests and roadblocks are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the coming days. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

The heatwave has affected most of Pakistan in recent weeks, notably including Sindh province.

Periodic power outages generally exacerbate extreme summer heat in Pakistan. In particular, Karachi has been affected by extremely high summer temperatures in recent years. In 2015, a heatwave in Karachi left at least one thousand people dead.

Advice

Individuals present in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [0.4 gallons] of water per day; however, it is advised to avoid drinking in public during Ramadan), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in vulnerable populations such as young children and seniors. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
