South Africa: Pro-Zuma demonstrations in Durban June 7-8 /update 2
Zuma supporters plan to hold demonstrations in Durban June 7-8; localized traffic disruptions expected
Event
Supporters of former President Jacob Zuma are expected to march in Durban on Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8, ahead of Zuma’s June 9 appearance at the Durban High
Court. On Thursday, supporters plan to organize a motorcade in the Central Business District between 17:00 and 19:00 (local time) and hold a night vigil at Albert Park from 18:00 until 08:00 the next day. On Friday, thousands of people are expected to march beginning at 07:30 from the King Dinizulu Park to the courthouse, where Zuma will face corruption charges. An increased security presence will be deployed throughout the city.
Context
Zuma is facing 16 counts of corruption, fraud, and money laundering related to a decades-old arms deal. The court ruled in early April to delay the hearing until June following a request by Zuma’s lawyer. According to the state prosecutor, the state will be ready to start Zuma’s trial in November.
Zuma was deputy president at the time of the 1990s arms deal. Charges were filed against him but then dropped by national prosecutors shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009. Since his election nine years ago, his opponents have fought to have the charges reinstated. Zuma countered with his own legal challenges but prosecutors re-filed the charges after Zuma was forced from power by his own party in February 2018.
Advice
Individuals present in Durban are advised to avoid all demonstrations as violence can break out with little to no warning.
More generally, individuals are advised - particularly in urban areas - to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be aware that criminals may target travelers arriving at airports, when they are particularly vulnerable (disoriented, carrying valuables, etc.); prepare your transfer from the airport ahead of time and be alert. Generally speaking, be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling by foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
