Severe flood warnings in place for 61 provinces in Thailand as of June 5; consequent transportation disruptions and power outages possible in the coming days

Warning

Event

Thai authorities have issued severe flood warnings for 61 provinces as of Tuesday, June 5, due to heavy rain that is forecast to affect much of the country over the next week. Of those provinces under the flood warnings, 17 are in the north of the country, 17 in the northeast, 18 in the central plains, and nine in the south. Heavy rain and consequent flooding, transportation disruptions, and power outages are expected in affected areas in the coming days.

Context

Thailand is currently experiencing its monsoon season, which typically spans from April to October.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm travel reservations, and remain vigilant when driving in hazardous conditions.

In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
