Thailand: Flooding across northern regions as of Oct. 5

Flooding impacting several northern regions of Thailand, including Chiang Mai, as of Oct. 5. Disruptions to road travel and businesses.

Warning

Flooding, coinciding with the 2024 southwest monsoon period, is impacting several areas of northern Thailand, Oct. 5. Rivers and dams in the vicinity of Chiang Mai, including the Ping River, are close to or have overflowed. Rising floodwaters have impacted downtown Chiang Mai; some reports suggest foreign visitors have left the area, and businesses have closed. In and around Chiang Mai, over 900 households have been affected by flooding. Multiple railway stations, roads, and hospitals have been closed or are operating at reduced capacity. Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is open. Airport officials recommend that visitors use Nimmanhaemin Road and pass through Wing 41 to access the airport. They also advise that visitors plan for 2-3 hours of additional travel time.

Further heavy rainfall is likely in the coming days and through early October. Additional disruptions, particularly to areas near watercourses or in low-lying locations, are likely. Disruptions to public transport and the power supply are likely in impacted locations.

Heed official directives. Reconfirm routes before departure. Reconsider travel into rural areas near major towns and cities in the coming days. Avoid driving through flooded roadways. Monitor local media for updated weather advisories and warnings. Exercise food and beverage precautions. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides, as well as mountainous regions where avalanches pose a threat. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
