Uruguay: Storm alerts issued for north, center June 11

Orange and yellow storm alerts issued for northern and central Uruguay June 11; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued orange alerts - the second highest level - for the north of the country. As of the 09:00 (local time) on Monday, June 11, they are in place in the departments of Artigas and Rivera, as well as parts of Paysandú, Salto, and Tacuarembó. Thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail, and strong winds are expected. Associated flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Lower yellow alerts are also in place in central areas of the country, including in the departments of Cerro Largo, Durazno, Flores, Florida, Lavalleja, Maldonado, Paysandú, Río Negro, Rocha, Salto, Tacuarembó, and Treinta y Tres.

Flooding is relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.
