China/Japan: Tropical storm Ampil landfall expected in Southern Japan and Eastern China July 20-23
Tropical Storm Ampil forecast to hit Southern Japan and Eastern China July 20-23; flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions likely
Event
On Friday, July 20, and Saturday, July 21, the Ampil Tropical storm might reach Southern Japan, especially Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands. The storm is expected to touch Japanese coast on July 21 and is likely to disrupt flights at Naha Airport (OKA) located in Okinawa prefecture. Damaging winds and flooding rainfalls are expected. Consequent power outages, tree damages and other transportation disruptions are possible. Coastal locations will also be at risk of dangerous storm surge flooding.
Furthermore, the Ampil Tropical storm is expected to reach eastern mainland China, notably in Ningbo (Zhejiang province) by Sunday, July 22. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are therefore likely and may also affect other eastern cities such as Shanghai and Hangzhou. Transportation disruptions, power outages and material damages are possible.
Context
Typhoons and tropical storms regularly hit these areas from June through November after gathering strength in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.

Individuals traveling to, from, or via the abovementioned areas are advised to verify the status of their flight prior to departure for the airport. Those present in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
