India: Maratha group to hold sit-in in Mumbai August 1

Maratha group will hold a jail bharo andolan at Azad Maidan in southern Mumbai on August 1; localized disruptions possible

Warning

Event

Members of the Maratha organization Maratha Kranti Morcha will hold a jail bharo andolan in Mumbai on Wednesday, August 1. A jail bharo andolan is a peaceful protest where participants intentionally allow themselves to be arrested in order to fill jail cells. The protest will take place at Azad Maidan in southern Mumbai. Localized disruptions are possible around the protest site.

Maratha groups are also planning a "mega rally" on Thursday, August 9, in Mumbai. Sporadic protests and clashes with security forces are possible in the days leading up to the rally.

Context

Maratha organizations are protesting to gain a reserved quota of jobs and education spots for members of their community. They are also demanding action be taken against police officers involved in clashes during a July 25 protest, charges be dropped against demonstrators arrested on July 25, and the resignation of certain politicians. There have been five suicides in recent weeks in protest of the quota issue.

Advice

Individuals should avoid the area of protest, stay clear of large groups of people, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
