Iraq: Attack at Erbil government building ends July 23 /update 1

All three assailants involved in July 23 Erbil government building attack dead as of 12:30; continue to avoid the area

The attack and hostage situation at the Erbil government building that began at approximately 07:45 (local time) on Monday, July 23, has ended. A security operation was carried out to liberate the building and all three assailants are now reportedly dead, as of around 12:30. Several members of the security forces were injured in the operation and one of the hostages was reportedly killed.

Officials in the Kurdish region, where Erbil is located, have stated that attackers are believed to be members of the Islamic State (IS). An investigation is underway.
