Iraq: Nationwide protests over power shortages July 6-8
Electricity shortages cause demonstrations across Iraq July 6-8; further protests and shortages likely in coming days
Event
Protests broke out across Iraq from Friday, July 6, through Sunday, July 8, over ongoing electricity shortages. Demonstrations were reported in the provinces of Basra, Wasit, Babil, Dhi Qar, and Baghdad. During a protest over electricity supply and employment opportunities in Al-Midaina district (Basra province) on July 8, one person was killed and three injured after security forces opened fire on around 200 demonstrators. Further protests against power shortages are possible in the coming weeks as temperatures remain high around the country, placing additional strain on the electricity system. Violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
On July 6, the Ministry of Electricity announced that Iran had cut off a portion of its power supply to Iraq due to unpaid bills. The Minister of Electricity has reportedly traveled to Iran to resolve the issue.
Advice
Individuals in Iraq are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
