Nigeria: Heavy rain and deadly flooding in Katsina state July 15-16

Heavy rain in Katsina state caused deadly flooding in multiple communities overnight on July 15-16. Local sources report that Jibia town, Dan Tudu, Sabuwar, Tukare, Tsohuwar, and Unguwar Mai Kwari all experienced flooding. The heavy rain, which was particularly intense from around 23:00 (local time) on Sunday, July 15, until approximately 01:00 on Monday, July 16, caused rivers to breach their banks, resulting in at least 25 deaths and damaging at least 90 homes in affected areas. As of Monday, July 16, an unspecified number of people remained unaccounted for. As further rain is forecast in the area in the coming days, hazardous conditions (flooding, mudslides, blocked roads, etc.) are expected to persist and continued transportation disruptions are likely in the near-term.

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for lingering traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
