Event

The death toll from recent heavy rains and flooding in Katsina state has risen to at least 49 as of July 18. Local sources report that five villages in the Jibia district were affected by rising waters when a river breached its banks following heavy rain overnight on July 15-16. More than 2000 people in the Jibia area were displaced by the flooding. As of Wednesday, July 18, at least 20 people remained unaccounted for. As further rain is forecast in the area in the coming days, hazardous conditions (flooding, mudslides, blocked roads, etc.) are expected to persist and continued transportation disruptions are likely in the near-term.

Context

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for lingering traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
