Reports indicate a 23 percent increase in hand, foot, and mouth disease in first half of 2018

According to health officials in Singapore, 21,675 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have been reported in the first six months of 2018, representing a 23 percent increase over the same period in 2017 which saw a total of 17,661 confirmed cases.

Context

HFMD is a viral infection that mostly affects children. Symptoms include blister-like rashes on the hands, feet, and mouth, and usually occur three to six days after contact with the virus. The virus spreads through coughing and sneezing, as well as infected stool.
