Singapore: Self-driving cars being tested on public roads

Authorities of the Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore have announced that there are currently 14 self-driving cars being tested on public roads. The prototypes are being tested in low-traffic areas in the vicinity of One North Station, the National University of Singapore, and the Singapore Science Park. The vehicles have been fitted with a "black box" data recorder - storing video footage and collecting critical data - and a safety driver, trained to take full control of the vehicle if necessary.

Context

Singapore aims to operate autonomous buses in residential areas away from the city center by 2022. In 2019, trials will begin for an autonomous shuttle service on the resort island of Sentosa.
