Tropical Depression Son-Tinh to hit north and northeast through July 20, bringing heavy rain and flooding; consequent transportation disruptions, evacuations, and power outages possible

Warning

Event

On Wednesday, July 18, the Thai Meteorological Department warned that heavy rains and flash floods brought on by the arrival of Tropical Depression Son-Tinh are forecasted to affect the north and northeast regions of the country through Friday, July 20. Among the areas expected to be most severely affected by the storm are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu, and Sakon Nakhon. Rough seas warnings have also been issued in Pattaya and Phuket. Consequent transportation disruptions, evacuations, and power outages are possible in the coming hours and days.

Context

Thai authorities have issued weather alerts in 28 provinces this week as monsoon rains have affected areas across the country.

Tropical storms and typhoons are common during the rainy season, which typically spans from April to October.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for transportation disruptions in low-lying areas, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
