Uganda: Opposition members arrested in Bugiri July 25

On Wednesday, July 25, local police forces arrested 16 members of the JEEMA (Justice Party) opposition party in Bugiri (Eastern region). According to local sources, several staff members of local opposition representatives were among those detained. Reports indicate that the arrests took place at the Planet Hotel in Bugiri.

These arrests come ahead of the country's municipal elections scheduled on Friday, July 27. Supporters of the JEEMA party may stage protests denouncing the arrests in cities across Uganda over the coming days. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are possible near demonstration sites and polling places.
