Orange and yellow storm alerts issued for northern Uruguay July 2; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued orange alerts - the second highest level - for the north of the country. As of 07:30 (local time) on Monday, July 2, they are in place for the department of Artigas, as well as parts of Rivera, Salto, and Tacuarembó. Thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail, and strong winds are expected. Associated flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Lower yellow alerts are also in place in parts of the departments of Paysandú and Treinta y Tres.

Flooding is relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to maintain a safe distance from river banks, to keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
