US: Severe storms cause flight delays in Northeast July 17 /update 1

Severe storms cause flight delays in American Northeast July 17; lingering transportation disruptions expected in the coming hours

Warning

Event

Severe storms rolled through the American Northeast from Boston (Massachusetts) to Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 17, bringing heavy rain and strong gusts and causing flight delays at several regional airports. As of Tuesday evening (local time), hours-long flight delays are notably affecting Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Logan International Airport (BOS), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Localized flooding has been reported in the Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC areas. Flooding was also reported in subway stations in New York City and Washington, DC due to the storms. Part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway near DCA was closed on Tuesday afternoon due to flooding; though all lanes have since reopened, significant delays were still reported on the highway as of 19:00 on Tuesday. Wind gusts also knocked down power lines in some areas in New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and southern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Though the storms have moved out of the abovementioned affected areas, lingering flooding, transportation disruptions (including flight delays), and power outages are possible in the coming hours.

Advice

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to confirm the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport and to follow local weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
