Venezuela: Polio outbreak in Delta Amacuro ruled out /update 1

A suspected case of polio detected in the state of Delta Amacuro in April has tested negative and the World Health Organization (WHO) has ruled out the possibility that the disease is circulating in the country. However, potential travelers should note that various other disease outbreaks are ongoing in Venezuela, which is suffering from major shortages of medications and other medical supplies as well as the virtual collapse of the national healthcare infrastructure.

Context

Venezuela has seen a resurgence in disease outbreaks in recent years (including previous eradicated diseases), such as diphtheria, malaria, tuberculosis, and measles. These outbreaks come amid a multi-front crisis in Venezuela, with major shortages of medications and medical supplies (as well as food and other necessities), among various other issues. The vast majority of ten medications are difficult or impossible to find in the country, including many vaccines.
