Canada: Heavy rains cause flooding in Toronto August 7-8

Toronto received heavy rainfall on the night of Tuesday, August 7 (local time), resulting in flash flooding and consequent transportation disruptions and power outages. Some 5-7 cm (2-3 in) of rain reportedly fell in Toronto over 2-3 hours, flooding several areas, leaving motorists and streetcars stranded, and causing subway service disruptions. Among the areas most severely affected by the storm were Highways 400 and 401, the Downtown area, the area near Allen Road, and the Toronto Islands. The storm also caused power outages which affected some 16,000 people; authorities had restored power to most affected areas by the morning of Wednesday, August 8.

Lingering transportation disruptions are expected in the Toronto area in the coming hours.

Keep in mind that driving or walking through floodwaters can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
