Chad: Military operations launched in Tibesti and Batha August 20

On Monday, August 20, the Chadian military launched security operations in the regions of Tibesti and Batha. According to a military spokesperson, security forces have been deployed to the two areas to combat illegal mining. Local sources indicate that the military operations are in response to a series of clashes that took place between illegal miners and security forces on August 11, leading to the deaths of at least 15 people in Iri Bourgouri. A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Tibesti and Batha in the near-term. Further clashes between security forces and illegal miners are possible in the coming days.
