Opposition and civil society groups plan demonstrations in Conakry August 9-12 despite ban; heightened security measures expected

Warning

Event

Various opposition parties and civil society groups are planning to hold demonstrations in Conakry from Thursday, August 9, through Sunday, August 12, despite a government ban on protests. Thursday’s protest will reportedly be held near Tannerie and a sit-in is expected to take place in five areas around the city on Friday, August 10. Finally, a rally will be held on August 12. Specific details regarding the demonstrations have not been released as of early Wednesday, August 8. Anticipate a heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions in the vicinity of any gatherings. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Numerous other protests have taken place in Guinea in recent months, mostly over sociopolitical issues. Violent protests have been taking place throughout the country since July 2, after the price of regular gasoline increased from CFA 8000 to 10,000 (USD 0.88 to 1.10) per liter. The most significant events have taken place in the capital Conakry; police have forcibly dispersed protesters who erected highly disruptive roadblocks in various areas of the city.

Advice

All those present in Guinea, particularly in Conakry, are advised to closely monitor developments to the situation and avoid all public gatherings due to the risk of violence, which can flare up with little warning.
