Guinea: Conakry Airport strike suspended /update 9

Workers at Conakry International Airport (CKY) postpone strike set to begin on August 2 until further notice; normal operations expected

Warning

Event

Unions representing workers at Conakry International Airport (CKY) have suspended an indefinite strike initially scheduled to start on Thursday, August 2. As such, normal airports and flights operations are expected. The strike had been called to denounce the rising costs of fuel. However, it has been delayed until further notice to allow travelers to participate in Hajj and Christian pilgrimages.

Context

Various trade unions launched an indefinite nationwide general strike on July 24 to protest rising fuel costs, which continues as of early August. Violent protests have been taking place throughout the country since July 2, after the price of regular gasoline increased from CFA 8000 to 10,000 (USD 0.88 to 1.10) per liter. The most significant events have taken place in the capital Conakry; police have forcibly dispersed protesters who erected highly disruptive roadblocks in various areas of the city.

Advice

All those present in Guinea, particularly in Conakry, are advised to closely monitor developments to the situation and avoid all public gatherings due to the risk of violence, which can flare up with little warning.
