At least 15 Maoists insurgents died in a clash with Indian security forces near Sukma (Chhattisgarh state), in a forested area 500 km (310 mi) from Raipur on Monday, August 6. According to authorities, another anti-Maoist operation is underway in the same area of Sukma (Konta region).

Context

Violent Maoist insurgents (Naxalites) have been active for several decades in rural areas of the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as in the border region around Andra Pradesh. For this reason, restrictions on the movement of foreign tourists in rural areas have been put in place by local authorities.
