India: Inter-caste violence in Uttar Pradesh August 9

Event

On the morning of Thursday, August 9, members of the Dalit community armed with long wooden sticks (lathis) and stones attacked members of the Thakur community in Uldepur (Uttar Pradesh state). One Dalit was killed and a dozen more wounded before police intervened. The clashes appear to be the result of an argument that occurred the previous night.

Context

In India, the word Dalit means "broken” or “scattered" and is used for castes considered “untouchable.” Thakur is a word and feudal title meaning lord, god, or master. While caste-based discrimination was prohibited and the untouchability concept officially abolished in 1950, such designations nevertheless persist.

As a precautionary measure, individuals present in Uttar Pradesh are advised to stay away from public gatherings and community-based rallies as they may turn violent.
