India: Maratha protests planned for August 25, September 5 in Mumbai /update 3

Event

The group Maratha Kranti Thok Morcha, formerly known as Maratha Kranti Morcha, announced plans for several protests in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 21. An all-women dharna, or sit-in, is planned at the Azad Maidan near Fort Mumbai for Saturday, August 25. Additionally, a road roko andolan, or road blockade rally, is planned for September 5. Further details regarding the location and route have not been confirmed. A heightened security presence and transportation delays are to be anticipated in the vicinity of any gatherings. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

The group also issued an ultimatum on Tuesday that the Maharashta state government pass resolutions granting a jobs and education quota for the Maratha group. Maratha Kranti Thok Morcha also threatened a period of "agitation" to begin December 1 if the quota and other demands, including the release of youths arrested in previous protests, were not met in the next several months.

Context

The Maratha "group of castes" is traditionally a rural class of farmers and the community is socially and educationally disadvantaged. The group has been organizing rallies across Maharashtra state (capital Mumbai), which have become increasingly violent.
