India: Violence during general strike in Maharashtra August 9 /update 2

Event

A general strike (bandh) called for by the Maratha Kranti Morcha group to demand job quotas for the Maratha community took place in Maharashtra state on Thursday, August 9. Acts of violence and arson were reported in parts of the state, including Aurangabad and Pune district, later in the day. In Aurangabad, violent demonstrators ransacked several corporate offices and set fire to several vehicles. In Pune, several properties were vandalized and other incidents of violence were reported (e.g. in the Kothrud area). The protest had a minimal impact in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

Context

The Maratha "group of castes" is traditionally a rural class of farmers and the community is socially and educationally disadvantaged. The group has been organizing rallies across Maharashtra state (capital Mumbai), which have become increasingly violent.
