Iraq: Suspected IS attacks kill at least two in Diyala province August 26 /update 1

On Sunday, August 26, suspected Islamic State (IS) militants launched two separate attacks in the town of Mandali and in Abu Sayda district in Diyala province, killing a soldier and a civilian. Unidentified gunmen reportedly killed the soldier in Mandali before fleeing the scene, according to security officials on Sunday, and a mortar attack killed a woman in Abu Sayda. Additional IS attacks are possible in Diyala province in the near-term.

Although Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in northern and western Iraq. IS militants continue to carry out attacks, notably against security forces.
