Malawi: Opposition supporters protest in Lilongwe August 21

Event

Supporters of the political opposition group United Transformation Movement (UTM) protested outside of the Area 30 Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Tuesday, August 21. The demonstration was organized after a prominent opposition politician, Manice Hale (also known as Manice Abiti William Dawood), was arrested at Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) earlier in the day. Police officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. According to media reports, at least two people were injured during the protest. Further related demonstrations are possible in the coming days, particularly in Lilongwe.

Context

Hale has been a vocal critical of President Peter Mutharika’s government on social media. The UTM has accused the government of arbitrarily arresting her for her comments.
