Mexico: Tropical Storm Ileana approaching west coast

Event

According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Ileana - located approximately 500 km (300 mi) southeast of Manzanillo as of 07:00 (local time) on Monday, August 6 - is expected to travel along the Pacific coast August 6-8 without making landfall. It is then expected to pass south of the tip of the Baja California peninsula before dissipating late on August 8. A hurricane watch is currently in effect between Punta San Telmo and Playa Pérula, and a tropical storm warning is in effect between Tecpan de Galeana and Cabo Corrientes. A tropical storm watch is also in place in Baja California Sur, between Los Barilles and Todo Santos.

Ileana is expected to bring up to 15 cm (6 in) of rain to some areas of Michoacán, Guerrero, Colima, and Jalisco states through August 7. Strong winds and dangerous surf are also forecast. Flooding, landslides, and associated transportation disruptions are possible.

Context

The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
