Nepal: Security reinforced at government buildings in Province No. 1

Event

Security measures have been increased at government buildings throughout Province No. 1 in the aftermath of the August 12 bombing carried out at a municipal building in Biratnagar. 24-hour security is now in place at government offices, with security agencies placed on high alert.

Context

On August 12, an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in front of the mayor’s office in Biratnagar during the lunch hour. No one was injured. Police have arrested eight people in connection with the attack, which authorities believe was carried out by members of the Maoist militant movement Biplab-CPN.

Biratnagar, located in the extreme south of the country and an industrial hub, is the interim capital of Province No. 1 and the second-most densely populated city in Nepal after Kathmandu, with a population of 240,000.
