Passenger plane crash at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal, July 24, kills 18 people. Lingering flight disruptions possible.
Officials have confirmed that 18 out of 19 staff on board the Saurya Airlines flight, 9N-AME (CRJ7), that crashed at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) July 24 are dead. The aircraft's pilot is injured. The flight - carrying technical staff to Pokhara Airport (PKR) for maintenance work - crashed around 11:11, shortly after takeoff, and caught fire. The cause of the crash is not immediately clear. Emergency crews have extinguished the fire. Flights resumed at KTM after the incident, which prompted diversions and cancellations of some domestic and international flights.
As clearance operations and investigations continue, heightened security and localized ground transport disruptions are likely in the area. Lingering flight disruptions are possible at KTM in the coming hours as carriers clear the backlog.
Avoid the affected area until the situation stabilizes and authorities give the all-clear. Reconfirm flights at KTM.
