Nepal: Renewed protests planned in multiple cities from Nov. 23 over high-profile cooperative bank fraud case hearing

Political party to rally in several cities in Nepal from Nov. 23 over bank fraud case. Tight security, disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) plan to restart protests in multiple cities from Nov. 23. Specific plans are not immediately clear. Previous notable rallies have occurred in Kathmandu's Maitighar Mandala and outside the prime ministerial residence in the Baluwatar area, as well as the Zero Kilometer junction, Prithvi Chowk, and Shahid Chowk intersections in Pokhara City since Oct. 19. The action is to express solidarity with detained RSP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Rabi Lamichhane, who is facing trial at the Kaski District Court over cooperative bank fraud. Several hundred people typically join the events, with the largest participation in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Counterprotests by victims of bank fraud are possible. Further related gatherings are probable in the coming weeks.

Authorities will likely deploy additional personnel to protest sites and impose security cordons around the Kaski District Court building as a precaution. Demonstrators will probably march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Routes leading to the Pokhara International Airport (PKR) are especially prone to delays and heightened security deployment. Security personnel have used tear gas, batons, and water cannons to disperse earlier gatherings; similar use of force remains likely. Clashes between rival groups are possible, especially during protests in proximity.

Avoid protests due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Exercise caution near the Kaski District Court building in the coming weeks. Allow additional travel time in downtown areas, including to and from PKR; confirm road status and transport reservations in Pokhara. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
