Russia: State of emergency issued in Far East August 27

Event

Russia announced a state of emergency in Mikhailovsky and Oktyabrsky districts (Primorsky) on Monday, August 27, following the passage of Tropical Storm Soulik. The city of Ussuriysk has also been under a state of emergency since Friday, August 24. While the storm has weakened since passing across the Korean peninsula, it still brought heavy rains to southeastern Russia. Local authorities are particularly concerned about flooding and were prepared for river levels to rise by up to 2 m (6.6 ft). Transportation delays due to inundated roads and heavy traffic are possible.

Context

Soulik is the 19th tropical cyclone this season and previously passed through southern Japan, South Korea, and North Korea, before curving through Russia and heading northeast.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
