South Korea: Heavy rainfalls hitting central and south-western parts of the country

Heavy downpours fell in central and southern regions on Tuesday, August 28, that had already suffered the impact of the Typhoon Soulik last week. Up to 45 cm (17 in) of rain fell in South Jeolla Province, flooding the area and blocking road traffic during the morning rush hour. The overnight rains flooded over 130 roads, along with hundreds of buildings and houses. Landslides and power outages were also reported. The central city of Daejeon also suffered some material damages.

Individuals present in the aforementioned areas are advised to monitor weather forecast, refrain from traveling to flooded areas, and follow any instructions issued by local authorities. Please be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items that have come into contact with the polluted water should be disinfected and all food discarded. Please be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
