Algeria: Doctors union to protest in Algiers September 2

The Autonomous Collective of Algerian Medical Residents (CAMRA) announced on Friday, August 31, their plan to hold a protest rally in Algiers on Sunday, September 2. The rally will take place outside the Ministry of Health, Population, and Hospital Reform. This event ends a two-month suspension in activity by the union to allow for negotiations with the government. Security forces sometimes attempt to prevent protests and on at least one previous occasion, police violently broke up a sit-in held by CAMRA. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

CAMRA began a strike in November 2017 to demand better training, the end of a mandatory two-year civil service requirement, and an increase in wages and working conditions. The group suspended their strike two months ago to allow time for negotiations with the government.
