Tropical Depression Kirk is currently moving towards the Lesser Antilles; the storm is currently located approximately 1530 km (950 mi) east of the Windward Islands. According to the latest forecasts from the US-based National Hurricane Center, Kirk is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm before making landfall in the vicinity of Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines overnight September 27-28. No storm warnings are in place as of Monday, September 24; however, torrential rain, strong winds, and violent surf are possible on these and other islands throughout the region - e.g. Grenada, Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe - later this week. Associated transportation, power, and telecommunication disruptions are also possible.
Context
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October. Researchers predicted a slightly below-average hurricane season for 2018.
