Germany: Anti-surveillance protest in Hanover September 8

Civil society group plans protest march in Hanover on September 8 against increased police surveillance powers; localize traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Civil society groups are organizing a march against expanded police surveillance powers in Hanover on Saturday, September 8. The protest will start at 13:00 (local time) at Ernst-August-Platz in front of the Hannover Central Station. Demonstrators are planning to end the march at the Lower Saxony regional parliament building. A map of the march route can be found at the organizer’s website. Thousands of people are expected to participate in the protest. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are anticipated along the march route.

Context

The demonstration is being organized under the banner NoNPOG. Lawmakers in Lower Saxony are expected to pass a bill, known as NPOG, later this year that will grant the police greater surveillance powers. The bill allows the police to use certain programs to monitor suspects and increase the use of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV).

Advice

Individuals in Hannover are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and allow additional time to travel on September 8.
