Ghana: Heavy rain and flooding in the north

Event

Heavy rain has been affecting several areas of northern Ghana, including the Upper West and Upper East regions, since the beginning of September, causing the White Volta River to overflow. According to media reports, at least 34 people have been killed and 100,000 displaced due to flooding as of September 25. Numerous roads have also been significantly damaged. Further rain is forecast in the coming days in the north, as well as in central areas of the country.

Context

Flooding is an annual phenomenon during Ghana's rainy season, which runs from March to November. Fatalities and extensive property damage is common, as many areas lack proper drainage infrastructure.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
