Guinea: Opposition protest in Mandiana (Kankan) September 24
Opposition plans further protests on September 24 in Mandiana prefecture over socioeconomic grievances after fatal clashes between protesters and security forces
Event
A demonstration organized by the opposition in the Oudiala area of Mandiana (Kankan region) on September 14 was forcefully dispersed by the security forces who used live ammunition, killing at least one protester and injuring several others. The march was being held to denounce the government over socioeconomic grievances. A related protest was scheduled to take place on September 17 but has since been postponed to September 24. The situation on the ground remains tense despite an agreement to hold negotiations and further protests in the interval may break out should negotiations be perceived as unsuccessful.
Context
The September 14 protest was called against sustained delays in infrastructure developments and the perceived marginalization of Mandiana prefecture. On the day, the Prefect's house was vandalized and a vehicle was set alight. An agreement has since been reached between the protesters and the local authorities to give negotiations a chance.
Mandiana prefecture, which counts important gold mines, is cyclically confronted with waves of social unrest as much of the population remains poor and unemployed, despite the mineral assets.
Advice
Individuals in Kankan region should maintain a high level of vigilance and carefully monitor developments. All gatherings should be avoided due to the risk of unrest and the use of forceful measures to disperse crowds.
