An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), hit Sulawesi Island, 78 km (48 mi) north of Palu City, at 17:02 (local time) on Friday, September 28. A tsunami warning has been issued for Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi provinces. An earthquake with a 6.0 magnitude that struck earlier in the day left one person dead and property damage. The extent of damage from the stronger earthquake is not yet known. Aftershocks are likely in the coming hours and days.
