Japan: New tropical storm takes aim at Ryukyu Islands, expected Oct. 3-6 /update 1

A new tropical cyclone is making its way toward the Ryukyu Islands as the area continues to experience the effects of Typhoon Trami. Tropical Storm Kong Rey, formerly Tropical Depression 30W, is currently located 1775 km (1100 mi) south-southeast of Okinawa. Kong Rey is forecast to strengthen to a Category 4 equivalent with sustained winds of 222 km/h (138 mph) as it makes its way toward land. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin on Wednesday, October 3, and could last as long as Saturday, October 6. Northern areas of Taiwan and coastal regions of China, including Shanghai, are expected to be affected by the storm. Given the distance of the storm, variations in its path are expected.

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the west Pacific from June through November.
